Regina Honts filed the lawsuit in 2013 against HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Gadsden, stating that her mother, Doris Green, 79 years old, had died from an allergic reaction to an opiate administered by hospital staff, even though there were “clear warnings” she was allergic to such drugs when she was admitted.

Doris Green was admitted to HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Gadsden in June of 2011 for two weeks of rehabilitation, and was supposed to then return home to live with her daughter, Regina Honts. However, in early July, a nurse found Doris Green in an unresponsive state. Green was attempted to be revived, and then sent to Gadsden Regional Medical Center where she arrived in a coma. Two tests later showed that opiates were in Green’s system. She was stabilized and sent home, however, according to an article in Anniston Star, “Green was soon shown to have suffered permanent brain damage because of her allergic reaction to the un-prescribed opiate and died on Oct. 22, 2011, as a result, the lawsuit states.”

The jury took three hours to reach the verdict, and awarded Honts $20 million.
