Jake Peavy Among Athletes Listed in SEC Fraud Lawsuit as Losing Millions

San Francisco Giants pitcher Jake Peavy is among the athletes who were defrauded by investment adviser Ash Narayan, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleges in a lawsuit. Documents unsealed in federal court in Dallas indicate Peavy, Denver Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez and former MLB pitcher Roy Oswalt were defrauded of around $30 million.

Bloomberg News reported the SEC says Narayan appealed to the players’ Christian faith and interest in charitable endeavors while funneling their money to a company with which he had close ties.

In the SEC’s lawsuit against Narayan, it says instead of delivering low-risk investments, as promised, to his clients, he directed the players’ money to The Ticket Reserve Inc. while he served on the company’s board of directors and owned more than 3 million shares of its stock. The Ticket Reserve allowed fans to reserve face-value tickets to games where the teams had yet to be determined.

“Narayan exploited athletes and other clients who trusted him to manage their finances,” said Shamoil T. Shipchandler, head of the SEC’s Fort Worth office. “He fraudulently funneled their savings into a money-losing business and his own pocket.”

Among the incidents, the SEC alleges that after Sanchez agreed to make a $100,000 investment in The Ticket Reserve in 2011, Narayan forged documents and directed more than $7 million of Sanchez’s money to the ticket company. In all, Narayan transferred more than $33 million from investors to The Ticket Reserve and came away with nearly $2 million in hidden compensation, the SEC charges.

The Ticket Reserve “was forced out of business when two sellers falsely claimed to be selling 250 Super Bowl tickets, resulting in a class-action lawsuit against the company,” the Washington Post reported.

Peavy was a baseball star at St. Paul’s in Mobile when the San Diego Padres selected him in the 15th Round of the 1999 draft. He’s now in his 15th MLB season.

Peavy has been an All-Star three times, won the National League Cy Young Award in 2007 and played on two World Series-winning teams – the Boston Red Sox in 2013 and the San Francisco Giants in 2014.

After getting off to a rocky start this season, Peavy has a 3-6 record with a 5.47 earned-run average for 2016. Over his past five starts, though, Peavy has a 2-1 record with a 1.76 ERA. In his past 30.2 innings, Peavy has struck out 23 while giving up 20 hits and walking five.

Peavy’s most recent victory – a 2-1 decision over the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 12 – was the 150th of his MLB career.
