MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) – The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles will pay $40,000 to settle a discrimination lawsuit filed by an undocumented immigrant from Jordan following his illegal detainment two years ago.

The Burlington Free Press reports the payout settles a Vermont Human Rights Commission complaint filed by Abdel Razaq Rababah.

Rababah went to a DMV location to get a state driver’s privilege card soon after Gov. Peter Shumlin signed a bill allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain the privileges in 2014.

After applying, the DMV launched a fraud investigation into Rababah and he was invited to discuss his application. Rababah was arrested and detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement upon his arrival.

As part of the settlement, the DMV promised to institute new policies to prevent a similar incident in the future.
