WHATELY, Mass. — A western Massachusetts bean sprout farm has agreed to pay $78,000 to settle a federal lawsuit that alleged the farm was discharging pollutants into the Connecticut River.

The suit alleged that Chang Farms, in Whately, violated the terms of its federal Clean Water Act permit by discharging industrial wastewater into the river. The suit was filed a year ago in federal court by the Connecticut River Watershed Council.

The suit said the waste included nitrogen, phosphorous, bacteria, and suspended solids, plus various cleaners and sanitizers.

The Recorder of Greenfield reports that Chang Farms denied all the allegations and doesn’t admit liability under the terms of the settlement. The farm must also follow a plan to bring it into compliance with the Clean Water Act.
