Brooklyn Judge Tosses Anti-Vaxxer Parents’ Lawsuit Against NYC’s Health Department

A Brooklyn judge has tossed a lawsuit alleging New York City’s health department violated anti-vaxxer parents’ civil rights by mandating vaccinations in the wake of a massive measles outbreak. The suit was filed on Monday, and was dimissed by Thursday. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle reports that Kings County Supreme Court judge Lawrence Knipel ruled the suit—which cited debunked claims about the dangers of the MMR vaccine in order to get the city’s emergency order lifted, and argued that the current 359-person outbreak does not pose “a clear and present danger” to city residents—offered an “unsupported, bald faced opinion” and would not “be credited by this court.”


California Hospital Hit With Lawsuit After Secretly Recording 1,800 Surgeries

A former patient filed a proposed class-action lawsuit April 17 against San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare and one of its hospitals after motion-activated cameras placed in operating rooms filmed more than 1,800 patients during surgeries without their consent. Sharp HealthCare officials said the cameras were installed on anesthesia carts used in the operating rooms at La Mesa, Calif.-based Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s Women’s Health Center as part of an investigation into whether an employee was stealing drugs.

Buitron of Buitron Offices & Associates of posing as a renowned lawyer with an expertise in complex immigration cases despite not having a license to practice law anywhere. Buitron allegedly charged immigrants up to $30,000 for legal help and then had Susana T. Abarca, of the Law Office of Susana Abarca, PLLC, appear in immigration court for him, often without the immigrant client’s knowledge.
