WASHINGTON — With Coach Mike Lonergan’s termination from the George Washington University men’s basketball team now official, his legal recourse has been set into action:

This follows the school’s annoucement earlier on Sunday that the coach’s contract had been terminated. School Provost Forrest Maltzman wrote in a statement:

“The university has created and is committed to maintaining a community where all students, faculty and staff feel welcome and comfortable. We value inclusion and diversity and will not tolerate conduct that runs counter to those principles.

“The university recently conducted a thorough investigation into allegations concerning Coach Lonergan. The university concluded that Coach Lonergan had engaged in conduct inconsistent with the university’s values.”

According to a Washington Post report, the announcement comes after a thorough investigation from outside counsel, just two weeks shy of the team’s first practice.

This is also prime recruiting time, and at least one highly-touted prospect cut his visit short after reports broke on Friday night.

Lonergan finishes with a 97-70 (.581) records at George Washington, including a 44-39 (.530) record in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

His squads won at least 22 games in each of the last three seasons and he led the Colonials to a NIT Championship in 2015-16.
