CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) – Cedar Rapids-based CRST trucking company is facing a $350 million lawsuit in California for a crash in 2014 involving one of its drivers.
The lawsuit claims Hector Contreras, a driver for CRST, in July 2014 crossed the center line on California state route 14 and hit another car head-on, seriously injuring Matthew and Michael Lennig. The lawsuit claims both Matthew and Michael are continuing to need medical care from the injuries in that crash and may have permanent disabilities as a result.
The lawsuit claims Contreras had a previous criminal record that included convictions for possession of drugs, driving under the influence and grand theft auto. The lawsuit claims CRST and a company it hired did not perform proper background checks before hiring Contreras and putting him behind the wheel of one of its semis.
The lawsuit also claims Contreras had been involved in four previous crashes but had not been required to take a defensive driving course, per CRST policy. It also says CRST had clocked Contreras driving his semi at a speed of 99 mph just three days before the crash but did not pull him off the road.
The lawsuit also claims the CRST truck Contreras was driving did not have a working communications and tracking device, known as a Qualcomm unit, per company policy.
The lawsuit also names a construction company for not putting in a divider to prevent vehicles from crossing into oncoming traffic.
