DENVER — Dozens of homeless people have filled out questionnaires in order to be part of a lawsuit against the City of Denver. They also met with an attorney Thursday afternoon to discuss the pending legal action.

Denver7 previously reported that attorney Jason Flores-Williams is taking steps to file an injunction in hopes of stopping homeless sweeps.

Earlier this year, the city cleared homeless people from public spaces near downtown shelters. Orders to move along continue to this day, according to Denver Homeless Out Loud, an advocacy group.

“Look how many people showed up for this, these aren’t people who have resources,” said Flores-Williams.

Homeless people are being asked to sign on as plaintiffs in the pending suit. Flores-Williams wants to build enough interest to file a class action lawsuit against the city. He claims their civil rights are being violated.

Flores-Williams said the lawsuit will be filed in federal court within the next 10 days.

“Poor people are being abused and their rights aren’t being respected and when that happens and it’s an official city policy, that’s when you take it to federal court,” said Flores-Williams.

In a previous statement, Denver city officials insisted, “We are working to be compassionate in our response to this complex problem and are well within the law.”
