NEW YORK, Feb. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — A Missouri jury is now hearing evidence in the state’s fourth trial involving the alleged link between Johnson & Johnson talcum powder products and ovarian cancer. During opening statements last week, a plaintiff’s attorney asserted that Johnson & Johnson’s “love of money” led it to ignore a growing body of research linking the genital application of talcum powder to an increased risk of ovarian cancer. Among other things, he pointed out that the same research had caused condom manufacturers to stop using talc in the 1990s, and highlighted an internal Johnson & Johnson document which warned that ignoring studies linking talc to ovarian cancer could cause the public to perceive the company “like it perceives the cigarette industry.” (Case No. 1422-CC09012-01, Missouri 22nd Judicial Circuit Court, St. Louis City)

“Our Firm has been monitoring the Missouri talcum powder litigation very closely, as we are representing a number of women who were also diagnosed with ovarian cancer following decades of genital talc use. The verdict in this trial could provide insight into how other juries might rule in similar talcum powder lawsuits,” says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective medical devices, drugs and consumer products. The Firm is offering free legal reviews to women who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer following years of regular, repeated use of Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower for feminine hygiene purposes.
Talcum Powder Litigation
More than 2,000 talcum powder lawsuits are now pending against Johnson & Johnson in courts throughout the U.S. Roughly 1,000 of these cases have been filed in Missouri’s 22nd Judicial Circuit Court for St. Louis City, the venue for current trial. The same jurisdiction convened three talcum powder trials last year, all of which concluded with multimillion dollar verdicts for the plaintiffs. This current case was filed on behalf of a 56-year-old woman who used Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powders for more than 36 years prior to her ovarian cancer diagnosis.
The nationwide Johnson & Johnson talcum powder litigation also incudes nearly 100 cases that are now undergoing coordinated pretrial proceedings in the U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey. (In Re: Johnson & Johnson Talcum Powder Products Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation – MDL No.2738) Talcum powder litigations are also underway in various state courts, including New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court and Los Angeles Superior Court in California.
Women who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer following the regular and repeated use of Johnson & Johnson talcum powders for feminine hygiene purposes may be entitled to compensation for their pain and suffering.
