After nearly 40 years, original ‘Friday the 13th’ writer, Victor Miller, is suing for the rights to the beloved slasher franchise.
Friday the 13th could be getting even unluckier.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Victor Miller, the writer of 1980’s Friday the 13th, is suing Director Sean S. Cunningham over the rights to the iconic horror franchise. However, the plaintiffs, The Manning Company and Horror Inc., are claiming Miller has zero rights to the series that eventually became a financial juggernaut.
Here’s what the two plaintiffs said in Cunningham’s defense:
Wow, I never expected this Friday Feigns. It always shocks me when people sue for rights years, even decades, after the fact. It’s hard imagining Miller not wanting to involve litigation in the last 36 years since the original’s debut. Then again, maybe it was recently brought to his attention as a possibility from an outside source.
While this is interesting news, the situation may put further development of franchise related projects on hold. If Miller wins, the rights switch would begin in July of 2018.
So, if this does happen, Paramount, who is again producing the next film like its the ’80s, better get that film out before the switch.
Then again, maybe Miller wants the franchise to continue like the rest of us. Only, I’m sure he’s wanting to line his pockets with cool cash at the same time. Check back with 1428 as this story is developing.
