Injured Dakota Access Pipeline Protesters File Lawsuit

The defendants claim they have injuries that range from severe eye injuries, to head lacerations that needed more than a dozen staples to close up and broken bones from rubber bullets and other devices fired by law enforcement.

Last week we told you about Sophia Wilansky who was severely injured by what she calls a concussion grenade that blew apart her forearm and hand.

She was flown from North Dakota to Hennepin County Medical Center and has had multiple surgeries to save her arm.

For months now, protestors have been demonstrating in opposition of an almost 1,200 mile oil pipeline.

But this weekend, the Army Corps of Engineers said demonstrators are going to have to move, come Monday, due to safety concerns.

The corps said it has no plans to “forcibly remove” protesters, but anyone staying on the camp after that date will be trespassing and subject to prosecution.

“Are you worried people could die up at Standing Rock? Sure I’m worried about it. We all worry about that,” says Clyde Bellecourt, one of the founders of the American Indian Movement.

Bellecourt has been up to Standing Rock once, and plans to go again this week.

He says lawyers are right now working on a legal brief that will allow demonstrators to stay where they are at based on a treaty from the late 1800s.

“They’re saying we can’t be there alright, on the fifth, they’re leaving it up to the sheriff and the sheriff doesn’t have jurisdiction there.  I think they’re going to find out it’s illegal for them to be there, it’s illegal for them to be there and we can prove it, by treaty.  And we want to be impose that on them,” he says.

Bellecourt is hoping a judge will halt everything after hearing more about that treaty.

The chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe planned to speak at a public forum Monday night.

As for Sophia, her dad says she had a major operation on Friday, but still has very little movement of her fingers.
