A federal district judge in California has approved a settlement of a class-action lawsuit against Mercedes-Benz over faulty roof air conditioners in Sprinter vans.

The settlement extends the warranty on about 10,000 Freightliner and Mercedes Sprinter vans nationwide, attorneys representing plaintiffs in the case said.

Customers said the air conditioners leaked so much water, it seemed to be “raining” inside the large passenger and cargo vans, attorneys said.

Each roof air conditioner leak repair is estimated to cost between $500 and $1,000, attorneys said.

The settlement covers U.S. residents who are current and former owners or lessees of 2010-14 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 or 3500 models with original-equipment rear air conditioning units.

The settlement “is a fair and reasonable resolution of Mercedes-Benz USA’s exposure, and a very favorable result for the Sprinter owners’ claims, who will have these defective vehicles repaired free of charge,” Anthony Label, one of the attorneys who represented the plaintiffs, said in a statement.

Mercedes did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

U.S. District Judge Thelton Henderson approved the settlement on Tuesday.
