KLAQ, Buzz Adams Deny Mother’s Lawsuit Claims

Days after being named in a lawsuit, both Townsquare Media and KLAQ-95.5 FM radio host Buzz Adams responded to the lawsuit, saying that the anti-maternity leave allegations made against them by a woman are untrue.

Townsquare Media general manager Brad Dubow e-mailed a statement to the El Paso Times on Friday afternoon.

“While we can’t comment on pending litigation, the statements made by Stephanie McMasters are untrue,” Dubow wrote. “The truth about Ms. McMaster’s termination will be fully revealed in court. Townsquare Media, and KLAQ-FM, absolutely support working mothers and care about providing them with the time they need to care for their newborn as well as continued support for raising their children while working.”

Stephanie McMaster-Berning alleges in the lawsuit that she was fired in March, a month before the birth of her baby, because the rock radio station did not want her to be on maternity leave during the spring ratings season.

McMaster-Berning, who was known on air as Stephanie McMaster, is suing morning show host Buzz Adams and Townsquare Media, the parent company of KLAQ. Adams is named in the lawsuit as Michael Whitt.

Adams on the air Friday denied the allegations made against him in a lawsuit filed by his former co-host, but said he couldn’t talk about the specifics of the lawsuit filed against him and the station.

“I can say there are a lot of accusations made against me, and the things that are directly targeting me, I can tell you, because I was there when it didn’t happen, that they’re false,” Adams said during the morning show Friday. “There’s no truth to these allegations.

“The things that are accusations against me, my behavior or my character, I can tell you 100 percent, that if I go before a judge or a courtroom setting, I’ll tell them, ‘Not true,’ ” Adams added. “So whatever you’re reading, there’s my response.”

Adams on air Friday said he would not have said anything about the lawsuit if the station’s corporate managers had their way.

The Times reached out to the radio station’s management for comment Thursday evening and did not receive a response until Friday afternoon. The Times also reached out to Adams via Facebook on Thursday and had not received a response as of Friday afternoon.
