PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — About 800 men across the country have stepped forward with claims they were sexually abused when they were children by leaders of the Boy Scouts of America. A new lawsuit was filed in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court.
Lawyers for the Abused In Scouting group say 350 names of former Boy Scout leaders have been uncovered as possible abusers.
“Each one of these 350 abusers has probably dozens of other victims that have not come forward,” said Philadelphia lawyer Stuart Eisenberg, one of the attorneys representing the group. “Part of the reason we are making this information available to the press and to the Boy Scouts is so others can come forward and others can identify the ones that perhaps have 20, 30, 40 victims.”
Eisenberg said about 800 men across the country have contacted the group claiming they were sexually abused when they were scouts by leaders of the organization.
The lawyers want Congress to act and hear testimony from the alleged victims. If they won’t, they say local and state prosecutors could hold hearings.
