Lawyers for a Concord prep school and the family of a sexual assault victim met Wednesday to schedule the next steps in an ongoing lawsuit.
According to court paperwork, the parents of the assault victim are seeking damages in excess of $75,000, claiming that St. Paul’s School was negligent.
Wednesday’s hearing was held behind closed doors, and lawyers said the next step in the case is discovery, which could take a year.
After the lawsuit was filed against St. Paul’s School earlier this year, the school pushed back, asking the court to identify the victim, saying that she was making allegations that hurt the school’s reputation.
Days later, Francesca Prout appeared on NBC News. She revealed her face and her name and told her story about what she said was a disturbing tradition at the elite boarding school called the “Senior Salute.”
After Owen Labrie was convicted of misdemeanor sex assault and a felony computer use charge, Prout’s parents filed a lawsuit against the school alleging negligence and emotional distress.
In court documents, St. Paul’s School denies any liability and denies it could have prevented the assault. It also denies it breached any duty that it owed to Prout or her family.
Court documents show that both sides plan to call up to 30 witnesses. Attorneys for the family indicated they will depose students, former students, administrators, faculty and staff.
The trial is currently scheduled to begin in March 2018, and it’s expected to take about two weeks. The court documents show that the two sides could also seek mediation.
