A Maricopa County Superior Court judge is siding with Pima County in a lawsuit over an effort by the State of Arizona to shift more education taxes onto local taxpayers. Pima County’s lawsuit claims a state budget change last year unconstitutionally forces millions of dollars in education spending that previously had been handled by the state onto Pima County taxpayers.
Before Judge Christopher Whitten‘s ruling, Pima County was facing a $7.4 million bill, almost all of which was due to the Tucson Unified School District.
Whitten’s ruling says the defendants have until this Friday to object, and that a signed judgment will be provided by June 30. Officials from the offices of the Arizona Attorney General and Gov. Doug Ducey say the ruling is still being reviewed.
