Don’t offer prison inmate John Demos your Hershey Bar, your Kellogg’s corn flakes or your Bazooka bubble gum.
And he doesn’t think your Campbell soup Is mmmm-mmmm good.
The Washington state inmate filed a lawsuit in Macon’s federal court this week, arguing that those companies and several others gave him bladder and intestine problems.
Also named in the lawsuit are Hillshire Brands, Dr. Pepper-Snapple, Mars Inc. and the parent company for Post cereals.
His lawsuit claims their products contain “metal, fingernail clippings, bugs and other harmful ingredients.”
He’s asking for $25 million damages.
According to court records, Demos is an inmate at the Washington State prison in Walla Walla, Washington.
He filed his lawsuit by mail to the U.S. District Court in Macon.
His lawsuit claims that due to his bladder and intestine problems, he had to undergo emergency surgery in Walla Walla in August and is still in imminent danger.
“Plaintiff could not urinate or defecate,” he wrote. “Plaintiff Demos is still not out of harm’s way, as he is scheduled for more surgery.”
At that point, they wrote, Demos had already filed 500 lawsuits, including 32 appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court.
According to the Seattle Times, those lawsuits included:
— His civil rights were violated because paper money is no longer backed by silver.
— As a member of the Choctaw Indian tribe, he’s entitled to a $15 million reimbursement for treaties broken in the 1800s.
— As a male, he’s a victim of sex discrimination because the prison system won’t ship him to the Washington Corrections Center for Women.
— His rights were abridged when the prison didn’t recognize his new name: Anwarr Ibenn Abdul Hakeem Shabazz.
Court records do not indicate why he filed the lawsuit in Macon, but Demos apparently crossed out “Washington” on his complaint and wrote “Georgia.”
No trial date has been set.
The Washington State Department of Corrections said Demos has been an inmate since 1978.
Spokeswoman Shari Hall said her office was not allowed to reveal his convictions and referred questions to the Washington State Patrol.
When told about Demos’ lawsuit, she said, “He’s been in trouble for that kind of thing before,” and said she planned to follow up.
