The family of a teenage football player in Idaho is suing the high school for $10 million after the boy was allegedly raped by his teammates, with the lawsuit claiming the horrific crime was racially motivated.
On Oct. 23, three white students at Dietrich High School allegedly restrained their 18-year-old black teammate and put a coat hanger into his rectum, followed by one of the assailants kicking the coat hanger multiple times and sending the boy to the hospital, according to the criminal complaint.
Recently, after months of investigation, the state attorney general’s office filed sexual assault charges against the alleged attackers, with two of them being tried as adults and potentially facing life in prison.
“I screamed,” the victim testified during a preliminary hearing, according to magicvalley.com. “I was pretty upset. I felt really bad. A little bit betrayed and confused at the same time. It was terrible — a pain I’ve never felt.”
The alleged rape occurred after months of racial abuse against the alleged victim, who also was taunted by other members of the team, according to the lawsuit, facing racial slurs including “Kool-Aid, chicken eater, watermelon, and [the N-word].” The lawsuit names 11 school employees as defendants and claims that coaches and administrators didn’t attempt to prevent the racial and physical abuse against the boy, who has “mental disorders including learning disabilities.”
One of the defendants lured the alleged victim into a hug, which was the signal for the attack.
The suit also claims the football coaches encouraged violence against the boy — one of the few black students in the predominantly white town, with a population of 334 — standing aside as he was knocked unconscious by another student.
