Steve Harvey had a message Tuesday after his name appeared in a $500 million federal lawsuit filed against NASCAR that claims the series discriminates against black-owned teams and drivers.
“You are not going to do is drag me into the mud with NASCAR,” the comedian and actor said on his nationally syndicated radio show Tuesday. “I have no problem with NASCAR. Ain’t never had a problem.”
Harvey even read a letter he said was sent last year to Terrance Cox, the head of Diversity Motorsports Racing, that asked for his name not to appear in any litigation. Cox and Diversity Motorsports initially filed the federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on Friday and a reworked version was filled on Monday.
“While we can support your educational training efforts for underprivileged youth, it is not in our best interests to be part of any settlement or lawsuit of any kind,” Harvey said as he read from the letter.
In the lawsuit, Cox alleges NASCAR “advised Harvey that it would not sanction any race team associated with Cox and Diversity Motorsports” and, as a result, “Cox and Diversity Motorsports were wrongfully denied the opportunity” to create a NASCAR team.
“Here’s the problem with this story,” Harvey said. “I never had a meeting with NASCAR. I’ve never been interested in a race car. I don’t even even like fast cars. I like big slow cars.”
NASCAR denied the lawsuit’s claims in a statement released to USA TODAY Sports:
NASCAR embraces all individuals interested and involved in our sport, whether as partners, fans, competitors or employees, and there is no merit to this lawsuit. NASCAR has a long-standing history of investing in diversity efforts including the NASCAR Drive for Diversity, NASCAR Diversity Internship and NASCAR Diversity Pit Crew Development programs. We established these programs to create opportunities for women and minorities, and embrace people of all backgrounds, within the industry. Diversity both on and off the track continues to be a top priority for NASCAR and its stakeholders. We stand behind our actions, and will not let a publicity-seeking legal action deter us from our mission. NASCAR not only will defend our organization against these meritless allegations, but we will be asserting our own claims against Mr. Cox for his defamatory actions.
Harvey said he met with Cox for what he thought would be about his educational effort to expose underprivileged youth to the sport. But the meeting turned into a talk of a boycott against Coca-Cola, a longtime NASCAR sponsor.
“He was going to boycott Coca-Cola and have all the youth come down there and block the streets,” Harvey said. “I told him I’m not going to send any young kids down to block no streets in Atlanta in front of Coca-Cola. Coca Cola ain’t done nothing to me. Coca Cola ain’t done nothing to him. (What) if something happens to one of these kids? You have to be kidding me.”
