Taser Company Makes ‘Defective,’ Dangerous Stun Guns

The company that manufactures Tasers is knowingly putting “defective, unreasonably dangerous” products in the hands of police, according to a lawsuit from a teenager who was nearly killed by the stun gun.

The suit comes just three months after former Independence Police Officer Timothy Runnels was sentenced to prison for violating the civil rights of the teen, Bryce Masters, when the officer shot him with a Taser in September 2014.

The suit, which also names Runnels as a defendant, accuses Taser International, Inc. of covering up how dangerous its X26 model stun guns are when fired at a person’s chest.

Taser “attacked and sought to discredit everyone who raised a concern about cardiac safety,” according to a civil complaint filed Monday.

The company has allegedly refused to take steps that would reduce the cardiac risks of its stun guns, such as changing the triggering mechanism to prevent users from firing it for too long.

Runnels fired his Taser at Masters during a confrontation after the teen refused to get out of his car. The officer held the trigger for 23 seconds.

Dashcam footage showed Runnels handcuffing Masters, dragging him and dropping him face-down on pavement after the shot. Masters’ teeth broke when hit hit the ground.

Prosecutors said Runnels continued to shock the teen after he collapsed, and then filed a phony version of their encounter in a police report.

Masters was in cardiac arrest for nearly eight minutes and turned blue before an ambulance arrived and he was resuscitated.

Runnels pleaded guilty in June to violating Masters’ civil rights. The former cop was sentenced to four years in prison.

The complaint also names the City of Independence, its police department and its former police chief as defendants. The suit seeks unspecified damages.

Taser and Independence officials have not commented on the suit.
