The $100 Million #FyreFestival Class Action Lawsuit Has Arrived

It’s official. Billy McFarland and Jeffrey “Ja Rule” Atkins have been slapped with a $100 million federal class action lawsuit after their luxury destination music and culture event, the Fyre Festival, was abruptly canceled early Friday morning, leaving hundreds—possibly thousands—of people stranded at airpots in Miami and the Bahamas. What’s worse is that festival passes didn’t come cheap. There were ticket prices in the five digit range, and those that shelled out their rent money for a Caribbean weekend with Quavo and Kendall Jenner are feeling more than just disappointment to start the week—they’re seeing red. Today came news that the quest for revenge is being led by lawyers Ben Men Meiselas, Zack Muljat, Alex Alarcon and famed lawyer Mark Geragos of the Geragos & Geragos law firm.

The lawsuit is comprised of four class action complaints: Fraud, Fraud—Negligent Misrepresentation, Breach of Contract and Breach of the Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing; it was brought about by plaintiff Daniel Jung, who may or may not be the “Fyre Fraud” Twitter user who promised to join with affected patrons and file a lawsuit on social media last week. The first paragraph of the suit’s description briefly describes the mayhem that characterized the implosion of the festival: “Defendants promoted their ‘Fyre Festival’ as a posh, island-based music festival featuring ‘first-class culinary experiences and a luxury atmosphere.’” It continues, “Instead, festival-goers were lured into what various media outlets have since labeled a ‘complete disaster,’ ‘mass chaos,’ and ‘a post-apocalyptic nightmare.’” It goes on to compare the sights festival-goers actually came across—those that made it all the way to the Bahamas before the cancellation, at least—as something that looked more like “The Hunger Games or Lord of the Flies than Coachella.”

We just filed Federal Class Action against Fyre Media for festival of horror. Refunding ticket price is not enough! @markgeragospic.twitter.com/5CsNtQ6yjh

On the first page of the suit is a “demand for jury trial,” which means Ja Rule and McFarland could be in for a public tussle with Geragos’ firm, an almost surefire bet that the media won’t be done with the pair any time soon. Geragos is a renowned attorney who’s represented a slew of celebrity clients, including Michael Jackson, Usher and Chris Brown—the latter is apparently “like a son” to him. A trial of this magnitude involving Ja Rule will undoubtedly be headline fodder for weeks on end, which is likely the very last thing Ja Rule wants right now.
