William Paterson Student Committed Suicide Following Failed Rape Probe, Lawsuit Alleges

WAYNE, N.J. — A mother alleges in a recently-filed lawsuit that her daughter committed suicide at William Paterson University after school officials failed to report and fully investigate the young woman’s alleged rape last year, NJ.com reported.

Cherelle Jovanna Locklear, 21, hung herself in her dorm room bathroom in November 2015, according to the lawsuit her mother, Marquessa C. Jackson-Locklear filed in U.S. District Court Sept. 8, the report stated.

According to the lawsuit, Locklear had been raped at the university’s Sigma Pi Fraternity house in September 2015, but did not report it immediately, her mother stated in court papers, the report stated.

Locklear tried killing herself Oct. 15, 2015 by overdosing on pills and, once released from the hospital, told Theresa A. Bivaletz, coordinator of the university’s Victim Service department, about the alleged assault, according to the report.

Bivaletz did not inform campus police of the assault until that November, the suit states, according to the report, and that detectives “failed to act” and protect Locklear’s safety, once aware of the alleged assault.
