Federal Court Judge Thomas Anderson approved a settlement regarding a 2002 class action lawsuit involving the Memphis police promotions test.
After a 14-year legal battle, the test was deemed non-discriminatory.
“The officers affected by this settlement were initially promoted to Sergeant by order of the Court, all but one of the officers has been subsequently promoted through successfully completing higher ranking promotional exams,” a City of Memphis spokesperson said in a statement.
According to the settlement, the officer are allowed to keep their current rank. However, the last remaining Sergeant will have a chance to earn their promotion, or be subject to demotion.
The Plaintiffs in the case have agreed to dismiss their appeal.
