Lawsuit Challenges Same-Day Voter Registration Law

(AP) — A federal lawsuit could cause some problems for people looking to take advantage of the state’s new election day voter registration rules. The new rules require counties and major cities to offer same-day registration in at least one location.

The lawsuit claims those changes are unconstitutional.

The suit says the new rules don’t allow equal access, especially to voters in less populated and Republican-leaning areas.

The state tested the program back in 2014 and made it permanent last year.

Several groups objected to the lawsuit, which was brought by a Republican congressional candidate, arguing that a change would now deny people the right to vote.
