Virginia Community Reacts to Lawsuit Against the Virginia School District

VIRGINIA, MN – Several students and parents from Virginia High School are suing the district over transgender locker room policies.

According to court documents, several families calling themselves Privacy Matters is suing for what they call inappropriate behavior by a transgender student in the girls locker room.

The lawsuit that has been brought forward against the Virginia school district accuses a young man, who identifies as female of grinding, twerking and dancing in the girls locker room.

Attorney Matt Sharp, with Alliance Defending Freedom, who represents the parents in the lawsuit says the school should do something that treats all students equally.

“What we advocate, and what the school has been doing is something that treats every student the same. So, every student would have the exact same option. Use the facility of your biological sex, or if you are not comfortable with that, then you have access to single stall restrooms, and lockers and changing areas throughout the school. Said Sharp when asked what the school can do.

According to Sharp, The lawsuit, brought forward on Wednesday, is one of several similar cases Alliance Defending Freedom is handling, all of which have the organization willing to go to the Supreme Court.

On Saturday, the Virginia community reacted to the the allegations brought forward within the lawsuit.

Waynette Larsen, is a social worker who is alarmed by the allegations, and thinks there needs to be more education around the subject.

“We need to have someone that goes into the schools that have awareness, education and resources and advocate for these children that are struggling, not only with their sexual gender, but also to explain to the children on why this is happening, or why these people may be different.” Said Larsen.

Another community member who spoke out, supports the transgender student but says there are rules that can’t be broken.

“Schools have rules for everyone, it doesn’t matter, transgender, not transgender, it doesn’t matter. You’ve got rules and everyone’s got to follow them. I mean, there’s no other way to say it. There are rules, follow them. Everybody has to follow them.” Said Joy LaMouria.

Sharp said the goal of the lawsuit is to protect the privacy of the girls, and to hold the Department of Education accountable.
No court date has been set for the case.

The attorney for the families says they’re not speaking publicly, because several have received threats from students, faculty and parents.

Calls to the Virginia Public school district have not been returned.
